Riding & Legal
What is pedal assist and how does it work?
Pedal assist is a system that adds motor support while you pedal. A sensor detects when the pedals are turning and the motor helps drive the bike, making starts, hills and longer rides easier. You can select an assistance level using the bike’s controls: lower levels provide gentler support and generally use less battery, while higher levels provide stronger assistance but may reduce range. You remain in control and can ride like a normal bicycle with the assistance turned down or switched off. Motor assistance stops when you stop pedaling or reach the applicable assisted speed limit.
Are E-Bikes legal in Australia?
Yes. E-bikes are legal in Australia when they comply with national e-bike standards.
In general, compliant e-bikes must:
• Use pedal assist (motor works while pedalling)
• Have a maximum motor output of 250W
• Provide assistance up to 25 km/h, after which the motor cuts out
• Follow standard bicycle road rules such as helmet use and bike path regulations
Regulations can vary slightly between states, so riders should check their local road authority for the latest information.
Do I need a licence or registration to ride it?
No. Because compliant e-bikes are classified as bicycles, you do not need a license, registration, or insurance to ride them.
What is the difference between road mode and private property mode?
Road mode limits motor assistance to the settings intended for compliant public road use. Some Thor models may also offer higher performance capability for use on private property where permitted. Higher speed or higher-power settings may not be legal on public roads, bike paths or shared paths, so check your model’s specifications and use the correct mode for the location.
Battery, Range & Ownership
How far can a Thor E-Bike travel on one charge?
Range varies between models and battery options, so check the range estimate on the relevant product page. Real world range also depends on rider and cargo weight, terrain, hills, tyre pressure, wind, temperature, riding speed and the level of assistance used. Hard acceleration and higher assistance levels will reduce range.
How long does the battery take to charge?
Charging time varies by model, battery capacity, charger and how depleted the battery is. Check the relevant product information or supplied instructions for the expected charging time. Always use the correct supplied or approved charger in a dry, ventilated area and follow the charging instructions provided with your product.
Can I ride the E-Bike in the rain?
Thor E-Bikes are designed for normal everyday riding conditions, but water resistance can vary by model. They should not be submerged or blasted with high pressure water. Avoid deep water, flooding and direct pressure washing around the battery, display, motor, controller and electrical connections. Check your model’s instructions, then dry and store it properly after wet rides.
Why is the throttle limited to 6 km/h?
Australian regulations limit throttle-only operation to 6 km/h, which allows it to function as a walk-assist feature. To go faster, the motor activates through pedal assist while riding.
How often should an E-Bike be serviced?
Like any bicycle, an E-Bike needs routine maintenance. Check tyre pressure, brakes, wheel fasteners, chain and moving parts regularly. As a practical guide, consider a professional service around every 1,000 km or at least once a year, and sooner if you ride frequently, carry heavier loads, ride near sand or salt or notice anything that does not feel right.
Warranty & Support
What warranty is included?
Thor warranty coverage includes 1 year for the frame, motor, battery, controller and display, subject to the warranty terms. Keep your proof of purchase and see our full Warranty page for coverage details and exclusions.
What happens if something goes wrong after I buy?
You won’t be left guessing. Contact Thor with your order number, a clear description of the issue and, where useful, photos or video. We’ll help diagnose the problem and guide you through the next step. For an eligible warranty issue, support may include troubleshooting, replacement parts, repair guidance, supplier/manufacturer support or another appropriate remedy. Start through our Contact Us page.
Can I get replacement parts if something wears out or breaks?
Yes, we can help identify and source compatible replacement parts for Thor products. Common bicycle wear items such as tyres, tubes and brake components may also be available through bike shops. For electrical or model specific parts such as batteries, controllers, displays or wiring, contact Thor first so we can help confirm compatibility before anything is fitted.
Can my local bike shop service or repair my Thor?
In many cases, yes. Standard bicycle jobs such as tyres, tubes, brakes, drivetrain adjustments and general servicing can often be handled by a competent local bike shop. For electrical faults, warranty work or model specific components, contact Thor before authorising repairs so we can help with diagnosis, parts compatibility and any warranty requirements.
Will modifications affect my warranty or road legality?
They can. Unauthorised changes to the battery, charger, controller, display, motor, wiring, speed settings, brakes or other safety-critical parts may create safety issues, affect legal road use and may void warranty coverage for related faults. Contact Thor before modifying or replacing electrical or safety critical components.
