5 Reasons to Choose a Dual Battery Bike, and 1 Honest Reason Not To
Range, passengers, road rules and price. Here is what actually changes when a bike carries a second battery, told through the Thunder V29 and one owner's real review.
The quick take
Most bikes make you trade range against everything else. A second battery takes range off the worry list, so the same bike can carry a passenger, handle rough paths and still get you home.
- EN 15194 certified
- 12 month warranty
- Free shipping to most of Australia
Reason 1 of 5
You stop watching the battery
The short version Two batteries, automatic switching, up to 100km.
The V29 carries two removable 48V 18.2Ah batteries and switches from one to the other on its own, so there's no pulling over to swap anything. Thor lists the range at up to 100km. Your real number depends on rider weight, hills and which assist level you ride in.
Both batteries lock to the bike and lift off for charging inside, which takes 6 to 8 hours.
- 2 × 48V 18.2Ah
- Auto switching
- Up to 100km
“Having the extra battery capacity gives us much more confidence to go further without constantly worrying about range, especially when we're out exploring.”
Reason 2 of 5
Your passenger comes too
The short version Rear seat and front rack in the box. 150kg combined load.
The V29 ships with a rear passenger seat and a front storage rack included, not sold as extras. The combined load rating is 150kg, so add up rider, passenger and bags before you plan on riding two up.
Rules for carrying a passenger differ between states, so check yours before you ride with someone on the back.
“I can comfortably carry my wife as a passenger, and the bike remains stable and enjoyable to ride. Even better, she absolutely loves it!”
Reason 3 of 5
It's road legal the way it arrives
The short version 250W, assist limited to 25km/h, EN 15194 certified.
Plenty of bikes are sold with a bigger motor that's "locked" for the road. The V29 is simply built to the Australian rules: a 250W rear hub motor, motor assistance limited to 25km/h, and a throttle that works as walk assist only, up to 6km/h.
It's EN 15194 certified, and the battery and electrical system are UL 2849 certified.
- 250W
- 25km/h assist
- EN 15194
- UL 2849
Reason 4 of 5
It's built for the paths you actually ride
The short version Dual suspension, fat tyres, hydraulic brakes.
Dual suspension and 20 inch fat tyres soak up the rough stuff, front and rear hydraulic disc brakes do the stopping, and Shimano 7 speed gearing helps on the hills.
An integrated LED headlight, brake lights, indicators and an electric horn come standard, along with NFC tag start and a built in front wheel lock.
- Dual suspension
- 20 inch fat tyres
- Hydraulic discs
- NFC start
“The bike feels powerful, stable and smooth, and it handles longer rides and different terrain around Canberra with ease.”
Reason 5 of 5
The maths is simple
The short version $1,999, with the extras already in the box.
The V29 is listed at $1,999, down from $2,499. Both batteries, two chargers, the rear seat, the front rack, lights, a tyre pump, a bottle holder, a kickstand and a toolkit are all included.
Shipping is free to most of Australia, and WA, Tasmania and the NT incur a shipping fee, shown at checkout. Afterpay is available at checkout, and every bike comes with a 12 month warranty.

- Save $500
- Afterpay
- 12 month warranty
And 1 honest reason not to
It's a big bike
Two batteries and fat tyres add up. The V29 weighs 48 kg, so if it has to go up stairs every day or into a car boot on your own, think about where it will live first.
If that's a deal breaker, this probably isn't your bike, and we'd rather you know now.
