E-Bike Rider Safety

Good habits make every ride safer, for you and everyone around you. This is general advice to read alongside your E-Bike's user manual. If anything here differs from your manual, follow the manual.

Gear and helmets

  • Wear an approved bicycle helmet on every ride. It should sit level on your head with the strap done up firmly.
  • Be easy to see. Bright or reflective clothing helps drivers spot you, day and night.
  • Wear enclosed shoes with good grip, and keep loose clothing and laces away from the chain and wheels.
  • Gloves and glasses protect your hands and eyes, especially on longer rides.

Before every ride

  • Brakes. Squeeze both levers. They should feel firm and stop the bike well before the lever reaches the handlebar.
  • Tyres. Check the pressure (it's printed on the side of the tyre) and look for cuts or anything stuck in the tread.
  • Battery. Make sure it's charged, seated properly and locked in place.
  • Lights, indicators (if fitted) and horn. Switch them on and check they all work.
  • Wheels and handlebars. Check nothing is loose and the handlebars are straight.

Roads and paths

  • Check your state's rules. Rules for E-Bikes, footpaths, shared paths and passengers differ between states and territories, so check yours before you ride.
  • Ride predictably. Keep left, signal before you turn, and hold a straight, steady line.
  • Share the path. Slow down around people walking, give them plenty of room, and use your horn to let them know you're there.
  • Use your lights at night and whenever it's hard to see, such as in rain or fog.
  • Take it easy at first. Pedal assist picks up speed quickly, so start on a low assist level somewhere quiet until you're used to it.

Carrying a passenger

  • Check your state's rules on carrying a passenger before you do.
  • Only use a passenger seat fitted to your E-Bike, and keep the total weight of rider, passenger and cargo within the max load in your bike's specs.
  • Your passenger should wear an approved bicycle helmet too, hold on, and keep their feet clear of the wheels and chain.
  • Practise first. The bike feels heavier and takes longer to stop with a passenger, so ride slower and brake earlier.

Battery and charging

  • Only use the supplied charger. A different charger can damage the battery.
  • Charge somewhere safe: on a hard surface in a dry, well ventilated spot, out of direct sun, away from anything that can burn and away from exits and bedrooms.
  • Stay nearby while it charges and unplug it once it's full. Don't leave it charging overnight while everyone's asleep.
  • Let it cool first. After a ride or on a hot day, let the battery cool down before you charge it.
  • Stop if something's wrong. If the battery is damaged, swollen, wet, very hot or smells unusual, don't charge it or ride with it, and contact us. If it smokes or catches fire, keep clear and call 000.
  • Never open or modify the battery. Store it at room temperature, out of direct sun.

Care and servicing

  • Keep it clean. Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Don't use a pressure washer, and never point a hose at the battery, motor, display or wiring.
  • Get it serviced. Cables and bolts settle in after the first few weeks of riding, so have a bike mechanic check it then, and service it regularly after that.
  • Look after the wear parts. Replace worn brake pads and tyres, and keep the chain clean and lubricated.
  • Don't modify the motor, controller or speed settings. Changes can make your E-Bike unsafe to ride.
